The Women in Medicine Exhibit Series celebrates the contributions of pioneering women in healthcare and medicine. Made possible by a generous donation from the Office of Advancement, the Nancy Nelson Memorial Display Case was established in August 2023 to honor the legacy of Nancy Nelson, MD. Located on the first floor of the library adjacent to the Service Desk and elevator, the permanent exhibit space highlights the lives and careers of prominent female physicians and healthcare professionals, with a special focus on those affiliated with the University of Colorado’s medical campus and programs.
Beginning with Dr. Nancy Nelson as the inaugural subject, the exhibit series features a new honoree approximately every six months. A pediatrician, educator, and leader, Dr. Nelson was a pioneer for women in medicine, becoming the first woman chief resident in pediatrics and the first woman president of the Denver Medical Society. She also held academic leadership roles as a professor in both the College of Nursing and School of Medicine. Her enduring legacy continues through the Nancy Nelson, MD, Endowed Award, which provides financial support to medical students pursuing careers in pediatrics, family practice, or internal medicine.
To ensure broader access to these women’s stories, each physical display will be complemented by a digital exhibit, offering visitors a deeper look into the achievements and impact of each honoree.
