Letters lend themselves to fine art rendering. The “Recovered Writing” paintings in this show have the look and feel of words and symbols in ancient and medieval scripts—the kind found in and around archeological digs. These ‘uncovered text’ paintings, with their mystery, their intangible, undecipherable, unreadable script, contrast with the clarity and recognizability of alphabet letter paintings in the show. Equally hidden but not so mysterious are letters that serve as design structure for more traditional subjects—e.g., V-shaped figures, S-shaped landscapes.
