Library Archives Collection Development Policy

Statement of Purpose 

The Strauss Health Sciences Library Archives collects and maintains historical items and ephemera in specific subject areas related to the history of CU Anschutz. By doing so, it supports academic scholarship and learning within the CU Anschutz community and beyond.

Subject Areas Collected

  • History of the CU Anschutz from 1924 to present, including the history of the Health Sciences Center at its former Ninth Avenue location.
  • Major events and notable figures from the CU Anschutz, including distinguished faculty who have made significant contributions to their fields.
  • The evolution of healthcare in Colorado.
  • The history of the Strauss Health Sciences Library.

Archival Materials Not Collected

  • Personnel records of faculty, staff, and students
  • Admissions records
  • Grade books / Examinations
  • Financial records/Tax files
  • Records that contain sensitive information (e.g., medical records)
  • Duplicates of records already in the collection
    • Toxic chemical substances (e.g., cyanide, arsenic)
    • Controlled substances (e.g., opium, cocaine)
    • Radioactive materials
    • Potentially combustible or explosive materials (e.g., picric acid)
    • Items emitting strong odors or fumes
    • Items containing unknown substances
    • Items containing asbestos or lead
    • Mold-infested items

To ensure the safety of archival staff and researchers, and the integrity of our collections, the Archive does not accept materials that pose health, safety, or environmental risks (see Appendix A - Hazardous Materials Exclusion Policy for more information).

Responsible Collecting Statement 

Due to limited staffing, space, and the financial costs of processing, housing, preserving, and providing long-term access to archival materials, donors may be directed to other appropriate repositories if their materials fall outside the scope of this collection policy.

Appendix A - Hazardous Materials Exclusion Policy

The Strauss Health Sciences Library reserves the right to appraise all potential donations prior to acceptance and reject any materials deemed hazardous or illegal.

Hazardous materials include, but are not limited to:

Donor Responsibility

Donors must disclose any known hazards associated with their materials. Failure to do so may result in rejection or removal of the materials.

Handling and Disposal

If hazardous materials are discovered post-accession, the archive will consult with CU Anschutz Environmental Health and Safety personnel for guidance on safe disposal.
