Amid the demands of medical study and research, the Amesse Memorial Collection at the Strauss Health Sciences Library offers a proven remedy for stress and mental fatigue—leisure reading. Located in the first-floor Information Commons, the collection provides a thoughtfully curated selection of popular and bestselling novels, biographies, nonfiction, and magazines, giving students, faculty, and staff on the Anschutz Medical Campus a much-needed opportunity to step away from the rigors of academia.

In conjunction with the 2024-2025 One Book One Campus Activities, Strauss Health Sciences Library staff created an exhibit of books exploring the intersection of race and medicine from the Henry and Janet Claman Medical Humanities Collection. Located in the main library entryway, the exhibit showcases works that delve into the history and current discussions on health disparity, medical care for minorities, and racism in medicine and science.

For the past year, Strauss Library has been performing an overlap analysis comparing the library’s bound journal holdings within the library building, to bound journal holdings stored in PASCAL, our long-term storage facility. This analysis has allowed Strauss Library to identify duplicate print journal holdings which can now be withdrawn from the collection.

In 2015, Dr. Robert Shikes, Professor Emeritus in the Pathology Department at the University of Colorado School of Medicine, and his wife Patricia generously donated an extensive collection of medical artifacts to the Strauss Health Sciences Library. This remarkable collection, amassed over many years, includes over 1,000 items and offers a fascinating glimpse into the history of medicine. Among these invaluable artifacts are numerous glass medicine bottles from the late 19th to early 20th centuries, showcasing a variety of shapes, colors, and sizes.

As part of the rotating ‘Nancy Nelson - Women in Medicine’ exhibit series, which highlights significant women in healthcare and medicine, the Strauss Health Sciences Library proudly presents its latest exhibit honoring the late Maureen Garrity.

Dr. Garrity received her Ph.D. in Psychology from the University of Texas at Austin with an emphasis in Physiological Psychology. She then went on to complete postdoctoral training in Endocrinology and Metabolism at the University of Washington. In 1983, Maureen began her career at the University of Colorado School of Medicine where she had a distinguished career spanning over 34 years.

The Strauss Library is proud to present its latest exhibit, Honoring Our Veterans: A Postal History of Fitzsimons Army Hospital. 

The exhibit pays tribute to the veterans who received care at Fitzsimons Army Hospital. It showcases letters and postcards sent by soldiers during various wars, offering insight into their personal experiences and the hospital's role in their recovery. 

The exhibit was curated in collaboration with Mike Pascoe, PhD, a CU Anschutz Associate Professor in the Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation-Physical Therapy Program, who generously provided artifacts from his personal collection. The exhibit is located on the first floor of the Strauss Library, adjacent to the Teaching Labs.
