The allopathic medical model emerged during an era when acute conditions were the main scourge in the health arena. Despite its success in this domain, it is fair to interrogate whether this model of care has proven equally effective in addressing the prominence of complex chronic disease and undiagnosable syndromes that we now encounter. Functional medicine was conceived specifically to be synergistic with the allopathic model to better address this epidemic of the 21st century. This lecture explores and explains the principles and concepts of functional medicine. Attendees will learn how to effectively expand their approach to patient evaluation and treatment in order to achieve better outcomes for patients with chronic disease and vexing clinical syndromes.
Robert Luby, MD, has served as Director of Medical Education and Strategic Advisor of Medical Affairs at the Institute for Functional Medicine since 2015. Prior to joining IFM he spent 16 years in an academic family medicine residency program as the director of curriculum and faculty development. His entire career has been spent serving patients in community health centers, successfully applying the functional medicine model in marginalized communities and under-resourced settings. He now applies those skills to enable large healthcare systems and institutions to do the same. He completed his undergraduate degree at Dartmouth and his MD degree at Columbia. Past teaching affiliations include Harvard, UMass, Tufts, Boston University, the University of Vermont, and the University of Wisconsin medical schools, residency, and fellowship programs. Outside of work you will find him contemplating the nature of philosophy, the philosophy of poetry, and the poetry of nature.
