Q: What is PASCAL?

A: PASCAL is an acronym for Preservation and Access Service Center for Colorado Academic Libraries. It is a high-density storage facility for infrequently-used research library materials from the University of Colorado. PASCAL is managed through the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus Strauss Health Sciences Library. PASCAL is designed to provide high-density shelving for library materials in a climate-controlled environment which will preserve the integrity of the materials for future generations.

Q: Where is PASCAL?

A: PASCAL is located on the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus in Aurora, Colorado. The address is 13188 East 19th Avenue which is one block east of Building 500.

Q: What kinds of materials are stored in PASCAL?

A: Low-use materials, maps, reels of film, microfiche, bound journals, monographs, oversized and fragile materials from the University of Colorado libraries are stored in PASCAL.

Q: How are items retrieved from PASCAL?

A: All materials deposited in PASCAL are made available through participating library online catalogues or through the Prospector catalogue.

Q: Is PASCAL open to the public?

A: Individuals holding a valid University of Colorado ID may check out books directly from PASCAL and/or use the PASCAL reading room. PASCAL patrons must make an appointment 24 hours in advance and notify PASCAL staff which material they wish to use so that the material can be retrieved from the stacks and acclimatized prior to loan. Material stored in PASCAL is shelved in high-density shelving and is therefore not browseable. Research visits may be arranged by calling 303-724-1114. Please indicate name, telephone number or email address and what materials will be used.

Q: Can material be used on-site?

A: On-site user service is available to registered borrowers of participating institutions from 8:00am to 4:30pm Monday through Friday except for university holidays. Patrons are not permitted in the stack area.

Q: What is the turnaround time to retrieve material?

A: Currently a delay of at least two days can be expected for Denver area library patrons and three days for all other Prospector libraries (not including Saturdays and Sundays).

Q: How do I know when an item is stored in PASCAL?

A: PASCAL material is designated as “PASCAL OFFSITE” in the UC-Boulder Chinook online catalogue; “PASCAL” in the University of Colorado Strauss Health Sciences Library catalogue; and the University of Colorado Denver Auraria Library Skyline catalogue. Material stored in PASCAL is designated as belonging to the home library on Prospector requests.

Q: What are the loan policies for materials stored at PASCAL?

A: Monographs are loaned to patrons for 21 days with one renewal. ILL library users must request materials through their home library’s ILL process. Monograph loans are subject to local ILL practices with the actual loan period not to exceed 21 days and no renewals allowed. Serials are loaned for 7 days with no renewals. Serials loans are subject to local ILL practices with the actual loan period not to exceed 7 days and no renewals allowed. Media (non-paper formats) loans are 7 days, no renewals. Media loans are subject to local ILL practices with the actual loan period not to exceed 7 days and no renewals allowed.
