Borrow, Renew, Return

Library Accounts, Card, Applying for Privileges

  • Primary affiliated borrowers: The borrowing policies of the Strauss Health Sciences Library are designed to permit equitable access to the library materials by primary affiliated borrowers.
  • Secondary Patrons: Library privileges in the form of a free borrowing card may be granted to researchers, patrons from other University of Colorado campuses, or reciprocal institutions. You must fill out a library application, after which eligibility of the type of access will be reviewed by library staff.

View your Account

Once an account and library card is established with the Strauss Health Sciences Library, most members have access to their own Library Search account to view a list of items checked out, due dates of items, renew materials, fines, the status of holds placed and items ready for pickup. Login to your Library Search account with your University Credentials.

Holds

Hold requests allow users to request Strauss Library circulating items to be pulled and held for pickup at our Service Desk. Print materials will be held for ten days (10) from the date they are placed on the hold shelf before being returned.

To Request an item for hold:

  1. Go to Library Search, the online library catalog, and search for the item you need.
  2. Once the item is selected you’ll see "Please sign in to see request options and to place requests” under the description of the item.
  3. Select “Sign in” and you’ll be prompted to login with your University Credentials.
  4. Select “Request”, add any additional comments, and select “Send Request." You will receive an email notification when your items are ready for pickup and any additional instructions.
  5. You may also request one of our Circulation Lockers for laptops, hotspots and other gadgets by contacting us through AskUs. We will send a locker number and code via email allowing you to pick up or return your items 24/7 when it's convenient for you.

Loan Periods

The loan period for most circulating items is two weeks. The two exceptions are gadgets that circulate for 3 days and students may borrow laptops for two weeks.

  • 40 items may be borrowed by a patron at one time,
  • Users must have and present their University ID badge, driver's license or library card issued by the Strauss Health Sciences Library to checkout materials,
  • Service Desk staff may allow checkout to faculty and students who are regular customers and/or who can verify their identity without ID through patron record information such as ID number and month and day of birth,
  • Books may be renewed up to 10 times or for a total of 20 weeks if no holds have been placed upon them. A hold request will honor the current loan period; further renewal is not allowed,

Loan periods for Course Reserve items checkouts are either 4 hours or 3 days depending on the item. These items can all be renewed unless there is someone waiting for them to be returned.

Examples of items available on Course Reserve for loan:

  • Books, videos, and DVDs,
  • Library copies on course reserve - usually books,
  • Instructors' personal copies on course reserve - usually books,
  • Permanent reserves - special items Strauss Health Sciences chooses to keep behind service desk,

Non-Circulating items, such as Reference materials and bones and anatomy models from the 1st floor reference collection must be used in the library.
