As part of the rotating ‘Nancy Nelson - Women in Medicine’ exhibit series, which highlights significant women in healthcare and medicine, the Strauss Health Sciences Library proudly presents its latest exhibit honoring the late Maureen Garrity.
Dr. Garrity received her Ph.D. in Psychology from the University of Texas at Austin with an emphasis in Physiological Psychology. She then went on to complete postdoctoral training in Endocrinology and Metabolism at the University of Washington. In 1983, Maureen began her career at the University of Colorado School of Medicine where she had a distinguished career spanning over 34 years.
During the early part of her career Maureen was involved in research and instruction as an Assistant Professor of Medicine. She eventually transitioned to a larger role as Associate Dean. First as the Associate Dean of Admissions for the School of Medicine, then as the Associate Dean for Student Affairs, and finally as Associate Dean for Student Life.
Throughout her career, Dr. Garrity was an exceptional educator, mentor and advocate for the students she served. She received many honors and awards highlighting her professionalism, and dedication. Some of these included the Chancellor’s Teaching Recognition award, the Faculty Professionalism Award, and nationally, the Association of American Medical Colleges Group on Student Affairs Exemplary Service Award. Upon her retirement in 2017, to honor her longtime commitment to the University of Colorado School of Medicine, a scholarship fund was established in her name.
After her retirement, Maureen continued to contribute by volunteering for the Pepsi Little People’s Golf Championship, an international junior golf tournament. In recognition of her efforts, she received their Volunteer of the Year award, and a merit scholarship was established in her honor. Maureen also helped to establish the Nan Ryan Invitational in Estes Park, a golf tournament with proceeds going to the Estes Park Junior Golf Program.
