Dr. Charles Meader

Dr. Charles Meader served as the Dean of the University of Colorado School of Medicine from 1916 to 1925. One of his most significant accomplishments was consolidating the schools of medicine and nursing into a central location in Denver. He played a key role in drafting the legislation that led to the establishment of the University of Colorado Health Sciences Campus at 9th and Colorado.

In 2016, the Strauss Health Sciences Library received a collection of documents from the School of Medicine Dean’s Office, including original drafts of the bills that created the 9th Avenue Campus. These documents, some handwritten by Dr. Meader, detail the establishment of the University Hospital and the Colorado Psychopathic Hospital. Notably, the drafts contain references to legislation from other states, including Minnesota, which Meader adapted to fit Colorado’s needs.

The finalized bills outlined the governance and funding of these hospitals, specifying that the Regents of the University of Colorado would oversee their operations. The Psychopathic Hospital was primarily intended for court-placed patients, with additional space available for voluntary admissions. Regulations set forth requirements for patient payments and staffing, ensuring the institutions provided accessible care to Colorado residents.

The documents have been scanned and are available in CU Anschutz Digital Collections.
