New School of Medicine Location

When the University of Colorado Health Sciences Campus was established at 9th and Colorado, it was believed that the land would be sufficient for generations. However, as the campus expanded, space became a concern. In 1996, the University seized the opportunity to relocate to the former Fitzsimons Army Hospital Base, paving the way for what is now the Anschutz Medical Campus.

Most of the original 9th Avenue campus buildings have been demolished to make way for redevelopment, with only the nurses’ residence remaining. The move to Anschutz allowed for significant growth in medical education, research, and patient care, furthering the University’s mission of advancing healthcare in Colorado.

The history of the University of Colorado’s medical institutions, including the contributions of Dr. Charles Meader, is preserved in the CU Anschutz Digital Collections. These archives provide valuable insights into the evolution of medical education and healthcare in the state.
