U.S. Army General Hospital No. 21 opened in 1918. On July 1, 1920, the hospital became Fitzsimons General Hospital in honor of the 1st American officer killed by enemy action in WWI, 1st Lt. William Thomas Fitzsimons. Today the hospital is known as the Fitzsimons Building on the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus.
