Mary Krugman - Early Life

Mary Elizabeth Kerber is born October 11, 1943, in Evanston, IL.

At age 11, Mary contracts polio and spends six weeks in isolation at Evanston Hospital. During that time, she observes the nurses closely, quickly distinguishing the exceptional caregivers from those who were not. This experience sparks her lifelong dream of becoming a nurse.

Graduates from Skidmore College, Saratoga Springs, NY with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing.

Supported by an NIH grant, Mary begins her nursing training and Master's program at New York University and  Mount Sinai Hospital. During this time, she meets medical student, Richard Krugman, in an NYU elevator.

On July 9, Mary Kerber marries Richard Krugman in a ceremony in Deerfield, IL.

Mary is inducted into Sigma Theta Tau, the International Honor Society of Nursing, and Phi Lambda Theta, the nation’s leading honor society for future educators.

Earns a Master of Arts in Nursing from New York University, New York, NY with a major in Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing and a minor in Nursing Education.

Relocates to Denver, CO, and starts a family that includes four sons: Todd, Jordan, Scott and Joshua.
