Mary is an integral leader of the Rocky Mountain Interprofessional Research and Evidence-Based Practice Symposium, a collaborative conference that brings nurses and health care professionals together from hospitals and organizations across Colorado to share research findings so that patient care can be improved.
Krugman co-develops and implements the UEXCEL clinical career ladder program at UCHealth University of Colorado Hospital to support professional growth for acute care nurses in clinical roles. Her 20-year longitudinal research demonstrates the program’s success in fostering a supportive work environment and advancing over 1,000 nurses at UCHealth alone. UEXCEL is widely adopted as a national model for professional growth in clinical nursing roles.
While serving as the Director of Nursing Programs at the Community College of Denver, Mary leads the program through accreditation in only two years.
Created the Clinical Scholar Model for academic education-clinical practice partnerships.
Mary receives the Outstanding Leadership Award from the Community College of Denver for restoring the nursing program’s accreditation within two years after it had been lost.
Dr. Krugman serves as the principal investigator for 18 research studies and contributes to seven additional projects, all aimed at enhancing nursing performance, patient outcomes, and organizational effectiveness in hospital settings.
During her tenure as Director of Professional Resources at the University of Colorado Hospital (1992-2012), Dr. Krugman meets Dr. Colleen Goode (1997) and co-creates a graduate nurse residency program that orients newly licensed nurses into hospitals. The evidence-based program is initially instituted at the University of Colorado Hospital (2002) and later endorsed by the National Academy of Medicine (2010) and approved by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (2014). Today, more than 500 sites across the U.S. have adopted the program.

The Dr. Mary E. Krugman Endowed Fund for Nursing Quality, Practice and Outcomes Education is established to provide flexible resources for advancing the education of nursing quality, practice and outcomes within the University of Colorado College of Nursing.
Posthumously, the Krugman's Memorial Garden is established on the southwest side of the Fitzsimons Building on the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus.
Posthumously, Krugman is inducted into the Colorado Women's Hall of Fame.
The first nurse receives the Mary E. Krugman, PhD, Endowed Nursing Research Fellowship. The fund supports infrastructure and mentorship for clinical nurses to develop, conduct and disseminate nursing research.
